The future of Donald Trump’s second term in office will be shaped inside a closed room in the United States Senate on Wednesday. There, on a secret ballot, Republican senators will choose Mitch McConnell’s replacement and begin a new era for the Senate GOP.

On Wednesday, Senate Republicans picked their new Senate majority leader, Sen. John Thune of South Dakota. He’ll replace longtime GOP leader Mitch McConnell, who is stepping aside from the job after nearly two decades.

The incoming Senate Republican majority made their very first major move, electing South Dakota Senator John Thune as their next leader. The Washington Post's Rhonda Colvin reports from the Capitol.
